An
afternoon tea party in the garden, with a Victoria sponge and scones with jam
and cream. The table is set with a beautiful antique tablecloth with a hand
crochet border featuring a '4 O'clock tea design. In addition to the words you
can see motifs of a teapot on a stand, a water jug, milk jug and a sugar bowl
with sugar tongs.
This design is
commonly seen on cloths from of the 1930's but this cloth is a particularly fine
and early example of the style. Teacosies and other items with the
same design can also be found.
I have seen old
needlework magazines that offer instructions to their readers on how to work the
crochet and so many people were able to make these items for their own
homes.
