This old
enamel chart lists some of the many items a household would need to run
smoothly. Each
item has a switch next to it which could be moved to indicate that the
item
should be included on the next shopping list.
These
are the ones I could identify -
'Ammonia, bacon, biscuits, blue, bread, butter, candles, cheese, coal,
cocoa, coconut, coffee, corn, cornflour, currants, custard powder, dentifrice,
disinfectant, eggs, firewood, fish, flour, fruit, gravy browning, herbs,
honey, jams, jellies, lard, laundry, lemons, macaroni, mantles,
margarine, matches, meat, milk, mustard, nutmeg, oatmeal, oil, pepper,
plate , polish, potatoes, prunes, raisins, rice, sago, salad dressing,
salt, sauces, sausages, soap, soda, soups, spices, spirits, starch, stationery,
suet, sugar, sultanas, sweetmeats, tapioca, tea, turpentine, vanilla,
vegetables, vim, vinegar, whiting.'
There are a few items here that
are a bit obscure, and some where the words are too long to fit into
the space provided.
'Dentifrice' was the
trade name of a type of toothpaste.
'Blue' was a
substance that was put in the wash to make clothes whiter!
'Mantles' were
actually 'Gas Mantles' and were used when homes had gas lighting.
'Gravy Browning' was
used to make a gravy to pour over meat.
