Enamelware
I found these pictures of enamelware in an old
catalogue from a large metal manufacturing company that was
located in Bristol, England. The catalogue is dated 1937. The
company produced thousands of household items and the catalogue
itself consists of over 1500 pages. It makes fascinating
reading.
Here
I have included two pages of pictures of the enamelware
that they had in their range. I wonder how many thousands of
each item they sold. And I wonder if any of you own one of their
items? See if you recognize any.
I laughed
when I saw the 'Institution' teapot in the illustration above. This would
have been a large teapot from which you could pour many cups of tea. It
would have been used in places such as hospitals, canteens and similar institutions.
I know a
church hall near where I live where they have a very similar one that is
still in use. It is green and cream in colour so must surely date
from the 1930's. They must have served many thousands of cups of tea from that
pot over the years.
Most of the articles
are available in several sizes. The large bread bin costs about 50 pence
sterling (100 yen).
Please don't send us any orders for them!
I
particularly like the brush holder and washstand. It would be lovely to
be able to buy them now at 1930's prices. To give you an example - the
whole washstand with basin, pail and jug cost 25 shillings. This is an old
currency which we no longer use. It is the equivalent of about £1. 20p
sterling, or 250 yen. However I do
think these are wholesale prices!
