It is still possible to
find old examples of this 'stamen' jewellery on market stalls. I have
occasionally seen pieces but this is the first time I have seen an
explanation of how they were made. I believe it is still possible to
find these bundles of artificial stamens, so why not have a go at making a brooch or some
earrings.
Take a metal jewellery
mount and cover it with a thin layer of metal glue. Add a piece of
modelling clay, shaping it so that it is thicker in the middle of the
mount and tapering down towards the edges. Cut most of the stem off a
stamen and dab the end with glue. Push it into the clay, near the edge
of the mount. Starting at this edge, repeat the procedure, adding rows
of stamens in the colours you have chosen. The stamens should be placed
closely together so that the clay does not show. The stamens in the
centre should have slightly shorter stems than the ones at the edges.
