Below you will find some still images of the museum's Christmas
display.
|
These
pictures were taken in the week before Christmas at a small local museum
in north London called Church Farmhouse Museum. Every Christmas they
decorate one of their rooms for a Victorian Christmas.
The furniture
remains there on display all year but they add all the decorations and
toys for the Christmas exhibition.
This is the sort of Christmas celebration a middle-class family
would have had around 1850. The room is decorated with holly and ivy
from the garden. By this date the Christmas tree had been introduced
from Germany and become very popular due to the influence of Queen
Victoria's German husband Prince Albert.
|
|
The table
is laid as if the Christmas dinner has been eaten and the evening's
entertainment has already begun. Fruit, nuts and mince pies are there to
nibble. Tea and fine wines are set out to drink.
Some of the family are
looking through a photo album, whilst others are playing games or
reading.
|
|
In the
corner of the room a lower table has been set aside for the younger
children. It contains a miniature tea set, a writing slate and some tiny
Christmas crackers. A game of dominoes is in progress. |
|
A pretty
pink sewing box is also on display. It may have been given as a
Christmas present.
|
|
The
Christmas tree was decorated with paper decorations and was lit with
real miniature candles. It must have been quite a fire hazard. Many of
the decorations would have been made by the children of the
family.
|
|
Around
the walls of the room various toys and other objects are displayed. Here
you can see some cardboard play masks and wooden toys. At the back is a
sled for a small child. The owner would soon be wishing for snow.
|
|
Christmas
cards were becoming increasingly popular by this time. Here are a few that are
typical of the age. I have to tell you that the museum has cheated
slightly and used modern reproduction cards here, but it does give the
right effect!
|
|
Beneath
the tree some small gifts are displayed. Doesn't the deep red colour of
the walls give the room a warm glow in the middle of winter.
|
|
Some
lucky children have received a toy theatre, skipping ropes and a model
of a town crier. A town crier was employed to ring his bell and shout
out the news in the streets for the population to hear. There are also
some toy animals and a picture viewer.
|
|
This
precious little doll comes in it's own wooden case. She is beautifully
dressed. Can you see the wooden spinning top Every Victorian child would
have wanted one of those.
Well that is the end
of our tour. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
