Waddesdon Manor
Last summer I visited Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire and so I thought I
would share a few pictures with you. Waddesdon Manor is a large
stately home about 40 miles to the west of London. The house and gardens
are open to the public for most of the year. It is a magnificent house
that was built in 1874 by the famous Rothschild family.
The
house contains many treasures, including fine tapestries, a collection
of beautiful fans, wonderful antique furniture and a stunning collection
of Sèvres porcelain. However, you cannot take photos in the house, so
you will have to imagine what they look like! Instead, I am showing you
a picture of the main fountain, which is on the terrace, overlooking a
wonderful view over the surrounding countryside.
Here
is the view from the top of the house, overlooking the fountains,
terrace and countryside. It was a clear, sunny day and I could see for
miles.
The
house is situated on a hill overlooking the Vale of Aylesbury. It was
lovely to see all the trees coming into leaf. During May the countryside
always looks so green and fresh.
The
flower beds on the terrace were a wonderful sight. Thousands of white
tulips were under planted with yellow wallflowers and purple polyanthus.
The scent from the wallflowers was gorgeous. I think they change the
colour theme each year. |

The
box hedging gave a neat finish to the flower beds. Once they have
finished flowering all of these plants are removed and replaced by
summer bedding plants.
Between
the flower beds and the main house there is a row of trees and hedging.
It is all beautifully tended and looked immaculate. I can never get
stripes like that to stay in my lawn.
I
think the weather must have been a bit windy before I took this photo.
The tulips at the front of the terrace looked like they had been
blown about a bit in the breeze. |
At
the side of the house the towers (which looked like something from a
fairy tale!) were covered in ivy, which was being trained to grow in
this diamond pattern. It looks very pretty, but must take quite a lot of
work to maintain. |
There
were large planters like these scattered all around the gardens. Doesn't
this one look lovely.
There
are a variety of buildings in the grounds, but none more ornamental than
this aviary. I think it had been recently restored, as the paint was
glistening in the sun. It contains a variety of tropical birds, who live
amongst the greenery. In the middle of the main building is this ornate
fountain. It provided a nice shady and cool spot to linger on a hot day. |
The
all-white theme of this section of the gardens was very beautiful and I
liked these planters with their cherub design.
