A sweet little pincushion with an
old fashioned alphabet surrounded by a 'lace' border. The alphabet is a
Victorian one, taken from an old pattern book, and I created the border to give
the impression of a small crochet trim. This pincushion would also look
very attractive worked in cross-stitch on an antique-coloured linen. I
think it would also be nice to put a real lace frill around the seam of the
pincushion too, to give a layered lace effect, matching the yarn used for the
design to the colour of the lace. The Victorians
often also often added a pattern of pins to the surface of the pincushion. You
could copy this idea by adding the pins along the letters of the alphabet. The
old Gem button box in the picture contains lots of antique cloth buttons,
a different size of button in each compartment of the box.
The pincushion measures 15cm
square (just under 6 inches) and is worked in cross stitch 10 count canvas. Full
instructions for working the pincushion are included in the download below,
including a chart for you to print out and follow and details of threads used.
For beginners we also include clear instructions for the two basic stitches used
in this pincushion. This
is a nice simple 'starter' project for anyone who has never tried needlepoint
before. It would make a charming present for a loved
one.
