A Patchwork Exhibition

On a visit to Dorset I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for this exhibition of patchwork and quilting. I'm glad I found the time to stop off there, it was a wonderful exhibition that I would like to share with you.

The quilts were made by students studying for a qualification in needlework. These are the projects they made for their course.

This wall hanging shows a famous local view called Gold Hill. It is a steep hill with fine views over the countryside. Yasuko should recognize it, as we visited this spot together when she came to England. I like the subtle colours they have used.

The creator of this quilt has been influenced by the colours and wildlife of Africa. Parts of the design have also been highlighted with African textiles. Can you see that the ears of the elephants and the wings of the birds have been given a three-dimensional effect?  I think this quilt works really well, particularly the wonderful use of colour and the imaginative design.

The students start by making small objects as they learn the basic skills of patchwork and quilting. This small banner was very neatly worked. There were quite a number of small items like this dotted around the exhibition.

Several people had made miniature versions of traditional bed quilts, which were displayed on tiny wooden beds ( about 30cm long).

On this course there is also quite a strong emphasis on learning to create your own designs. This imaginative piece is called 'The Bluebell Wood'.

Japanese style is very popular in Britain. I noticed several pieces in this exhibition which had a Japanese theme. I liked the clever use of materials and stitches used for this quilt.

The gradations of colour in this intricate quilt produce an amazing effect.

One of the most unusual designs in the exhibition, this interesting quilt was inspired by the ancient cave paintings of France. Although I love traditional quilts, I also admire modern design and was very impressed by the imaginative quilts that people on these courses had produced.
